Greetings Peace Quest classrooms and teachers!
We wanted to take a moment to highlight the latest additions to our Education Resources. We love hearing from you, so please feel free to send us pictures if you do any of these activities.
- KAIROS Blanket Exercise – Here is a teaching tool twenty years in the making, developed in partnership with indigenous elders across Canada. It shares the historic and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. Can be tailored to suit any age group. Watch the video below to get an idea of how it works. If possible, it is always great to invite a local elder to offer guidance during the session. You can listen to a short interview with a Heather Kitching who recently witnessed the exercise being run in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
- We Are One Canada – Benjamin is a 5th grader in Mississauga, Ontario who has a special message for kids across Canada. Help Syrian refugees feel welcome in Canada by the simple gesture of learning a few simple phrases in Arabic. Follow along with Benjamin and his friends in their simple DIY instructional videos! They effortlessly demonstrate that learning a little Arabic can go a long way to make newcomers feel welcome and safe.
- Indigenous Dakota, Nehetho, and Anishinaabe Elders in Manitoba released “The Great Binding Law“ which shares guidelines to respect, take care of, and connect with Mother Earth so that all peoples can live in peace. A printable PDF is available for download. Students are invited to illustrate or act-out lines from the document.
Here are some of our favourite lines dealing with the importance of peace:
We are a peaceful people.
We are not asking for anything for ourselves.
The human being was the last part of creation to be created.
It is our spiritual responsibility to take care of that life.
Kizhay Manitou had a vision of a world filled with peace and love.
It is through the land that we can find that peace and love.
All of humanity needs to make a journey to the land, to the sacred sites, places of healing, teaching and connection, to find peace.
